1965–2015

The lineage

My grandfather Dave Pivec was born on North Luzerne Avenue in Highlandtown, made All-American at Patterson Park High, and took a Baltimore rowhouse work ethic to Notre Dame, the Toronto Argonauts, the Los Angeles Rams, and the Denver Broncos. Then he came home and kept building: Pivec Advertising in 1976, a piece of the Baltimore Bayhawks pro lacrosse team, Courtney's Restaurant on Padonia Road, and Piv's Pub on York Road, the family sports bar he ran with my dad from 2001 to 2015. Rowhouse to NFL to restaurateur: hustle was the family business three generations before anyone filed this page.

Born into country life

Before I could walk, my family was in the paper. The Baltimore Sun's Dream Home feature covered my parents building on 25 acres off Old York Road in northern Baltimore County: my father Grant, a restaurateur, my mother Joy, a television traffic reporter, and me, sixteen weeks old, right there in the article. An 8,500-square-foot Georgian with a bowling alley in the basement, a family compound built around my grandparents, and a half-mile gravel driveway. That farm is where everything in this file starts.

The Fair Face

Before the receipts and the rules, one credential: I was the face of the Maryland State Fair. A farm kid's first brand deal, decades before I knew what a brand was.

2003–2015

The restaurant years

I grew up inside my family's restaurants: Courtney's on Padonia Road, which my dad owned and my grandmother helped run, and Piv's Pub on York Road, the bar my dad ran for fourteen years with my grandfather beside him. The pub hosted a Ravens players' show with Tom Matte and Gary Williams' Maryland basketball radio show; I grew up assuming every family's bar had pro athletes in it. Hospitality was the first business I ever studied up close: regulars, margins, and the cost of a bad night. Every venture in this file descends from that education.

2015–2021

The Blakefield years

Three-sport athlete at Loyola Blakefield: football, basketball, and lacrosse. Between practices I founded the school's Young Entrepreneurs Club and used it to teach classmates how options actually work, live charts and all. The teaching habit this whole site runs on started in a high-school classroom.

The first real job

Cybersecurity intern at Point 3 Security while still at Loyola Blakefield: installing security systems and drafting patent submissions to the USPTO on government cybersecurity work.

The first receipt

Lockdown spring, junior year. I ran a small account from $1,000 to $70,000 trading the covid whipsaw, and Stock Hours, the trading community I'd joined that March, printed me on their Student of the Month card. Seventeen, braces, already certain I'd figured markets out. The rest of this file shows what that certainty eventually cost.

The Navy detour

Took the ASVAB at Fort Meade and scored into the Navy's nuclear engineering program, one of the hardest technical pipelines in the military. An outstanding speeding ticket stopped me cold at MEPS. The best door that ever closed: everything in this file exists because that one didn't open.

The firm

After Blakefield (6th through 12th) and shifts at The Greene Turtle, co-founded PivCos LLC with my partner Gavin: options and equities plus investment real estate across Baltimore, Cleveland, and St. Louis. The first entity, Pivec Thomas Trading Group, had been filed that February at eighteen; PivCos was the evolution. A teenager with an LLC and no idea yet what the market charges for confidence.

August 2025, reconstructed from the moomoo order ledger. Eight green days, a $399,867 high-water at 12:59 PM on the 25th, then 1,873 tilt trades and a $412,031 single-session loss. Nearly $800,000 swung in 28 hours. One trade made $101,705 in 30 minutes and was down $163,675 four minutes earlier: not skill, a coin flip with an account on it. The lesson cost more than most houses: winners averaged +$1,166, losers -$2,230, and there was never a written max loss. Being right is worthless without an exit.
